Hole Shot Hole Shot Software: The Goal
The modern world is changing faster than ever before and most companies and governments are migrating away from older Windows based networking technologies to web-based networks that are endlessly interconnected making information easier to share and easier to access from any device at any time. Mustang adopted web-based technology in 2016 when it embarked on a new project to advance dynamometer technology and simplify its offerings. Mustangs goal was to increase commonality and provide customers with a more powerful and easier to manage controls package. Mustang already offered a full menu of testing capabilities, so we turned our attention to increasing access and decreasing clutter. By adopting web-based systems, Mustang can better service thousands of customers world-wide from one location and keep all of our customers on the most up to date system available. All enhancements can be pushed to all of our customers at the same time making sure all installations are up to date. Our latest controls package, Hole Shot Software is designed to keep our customers constantly ahead of the curve and ensure that their valuable data is secure and backed up to a secured cloud database.
The Server
Mustangs latest control system consolidates vital hardware components into a package that is simple and very robust. We started with a highly advanced DAC32 micro-controller of our own design. Our team of highly experienced engineers came up with a controller that runs multiple PID control loops at up to 1,000 Hz while also accommodating high speed data acquisition of multiple torque and speed channels. The DAC32 is housed in a very sturdy anodized 4U 19-inch rack style enclosure along with a mini ITX form-factor PC, hard drive, plenty of memory, wi-fi, blue-tooth and two ethernet ports. We shed Microsofts Windows Operating System in favor of a web service running on a Linux Umbuntu Operating System which operates as a wireless server. Hole Shot is a web-service that runs on this server which you can access anywhere in your shop. By operating as a service, the shop owner can use any device with wi-fi and a compatible browser as a client and access the dyno in this way. There is no need for a dedicated, specialized PC. Simply use any device you choose including Apple products, Android Products, Windows devices and the like. The Hole Shot web-service is adaptive and will self-select the graphical interface based on the device you are using.
Data Collection
The Hole Shot server processes data using the DAC32s 32-bit, 80 MHz microcontroller with 512 kb of FLASH program memory and its 128 kb of static RAM. The system is capable of greater than 1 kHz loop controls and communications. The controller has 16 digital inputs, 16 digital outputs, 16 analog inputs, 8 analog outputs, 4 frequency inputs and high speed ethernet based communications. The DAC32 is responsible for all dynamometer control and data collection while leaving vehicle data collection to optional USB, Bluetooth or wi-fi based modules. The server connects to the dynamometers torque and speed sensors as well as the lift control solenoids via a multi-pin harness. The eddy current brake(s) is controlled via an AC/DC controller mounted in a sturdy wall mounted NEMA cabinet.
Hole Shot Software The Local Web Service
The dynamometer web-based user service can be launched from any modern electronic device equipped with a compatible web browser. Hole Shot is not reliant on an outside internet connection to function but does use your internet connection for obtaining updates as well as data back-up. If your internet goes down your system still functions as it should. The system architecture does not rely on a dedicated Windows PC to function your software runs on a server that uses a Linux Umbuntu OS and your software is coded using modern Angular4 coding methods. Commonly used devices include personal electronic devices like tablets or phones, laptop computers, Apple products, desktop computers and all-in-one style devices. Common Operating Systems on compatible devices includes Windows, Android and iOS. Firefox, Safari and Chrome have shown to be reliable browsers for Hole Shot . The user will connect to the wireless Hole Shot network and type in their IP address in the browsers address bar to launch the Hole Shot local web interface. You can access your dynamometer as long as you are within range of the servers wireless service which varies depending on the layout of your shop. In most cases you will be able to reach the network up to 100-ft away. You can use an ethernet cable to extend the networks range to all areas of your shop or business.
Clients
Devonthink windows . Once loaded, the user will enter their personal ID and password to launch the program. Up to 30 clients can be logged into the system at once allowing multiple users to have access to data at one time. One user is the primary user and has access to the actual testing areas of the program while other clients will be limited to capabilities related to viewing live data, review of past runs, entering of new customers and personal settings. Hole Shot comes with a webcam which can be used to stream video during testing. Pulls are automatically recorded so data and video results can be shared with customers. Users can customize their experience using a variety of settings. Live Displays, graphed results and correction factors can be set by the user to suit their liking. Large smart displays can be set up near the dyno to enhance the tuners ability to access the data they need while they keep their primary devices display simple and focused at the task at hand. Dashboards can be created using a built-in utility that offers various circular gauges, bar gauges, video, drag tree and other controls and data displays.
Testing
Hole Shot lets you run power pulls, tune cars at a constant speed, perform quarter mile passes and 0-60-mph runs. It also has a road test feature that lets you adjust road grade or pull a trailer. Starting tests is easy with Hole Shot as the system is optimized for touch as well as keyboard control. Hole Shot offers the user the option to slow down the rollers after a test and provides plenty of different options for measuring power. Load can be controlled to simulate on-highway driving or it can be adjusted to match a users selected acceleration rate or load. Runs can be defined as being between two speed or the user can opt to only select the start speed and Hole Shot will know when you get out of the throttle and clip the data for you saving you the hassle of having to predict end speeds in advance. Hole Shot even comes with a virtual drag strip which can be set up on any Windows driven display. Simply open DragSim and the track will automatically appear when you perform a mile pass! Or, purchase Mustangs optional drag tree and have racing events to promote your Hole Shot Dynamometer System!
Results Analysis
Hole Shot lets you view your data in tabular or graphical formats. You can print your run tables with data arranged steps of 50 or 100 RPM or choose to list data second by second. You can decide for yourself how you want channels to appear by choosing default scaling, colors and smoothing. You can clip data after runs are completed to rid them of unnecessary data at the end or beginning of runs making sure pulls are as clean and presentable as possible for your customers. View data between different cars or compare one run on your car then another after youve made changes. Tag runs as baselines and make comments for each to track progress. Final runs can be tagged and printed using one of several PDF formats available. You can plot power at the wheels or calculated crank power. Choose your correction factor and scientific units imperial or metric. Everything you need is at your fingertips, literally, as Hole Shot graphing utility is touch friendly so you only need a tablet. No more cumbersome laptop or wireless hand held just grab a cupholder tablet mount, mount your tablet and now you have hands free access to your dynamometer!
Jbox Vehicle Data Acquisition Module
The Jbox is the primary vehicle data collection device. Weve consolidated all of the systems mission-critical data inputs into one robust, portable device. Power is provided by a DC power cord which connects to your vehicles DC power supply. An optional 110-220 AC/DC power adaptor can be added for obtaining power from a standard wall outlet. Communication is made available to the server via a 15-ft USB communications cable. Longer cables are available that are powered making 30-ft cables possible. The Jbox accommodates two (2) wide-range in-line AFR controllers with their 4.9 LSU Bosch sensors. These convenient AFR set-ups can be paired with 15-ft extensions as needed. The Jbox has a primary engine tachometer input that accepts several optional RPM probes. RPM and AFR inputs use high quality M12 connections to make sure they do not pull out and signals are clean and noise free. The Jbox also offers two (2) K-type mini-jack inputs which can be configured for any temperature reading. Boost and Vacuum measurement is made available via a built in MAP sensor and two TTL inputs are available for measuring frequency signals from compatible sensors. Six (6) 0-5VDC analog inputs are available with 5-volts for power. Each analog input is configurable. A Bosch brand weather station is housed inside of the Jbox making conditions compensation easy and convenient. The system comes with a sturdy handle and rubber feet to prevent damage to surfaces. Place the Jbox on a small cart or on the cowl area and make your sensor connections. When connected to the server the system will automatically sense the presence of the Jbox and connection will be made.
